Turn up the Music and Dance!
The purpose of this blog is to reflect on and address music, movement, and imagination in the STR²EAM preschool classroom. I will be sharing my thoughts on Music, Movement, and Make-Believe in the Preschool Classroom, Nature Jam’s Preschool Prodigies Pilot-Sweet Beets-Rhythm Lesson, and Song for Kids. I will also discuss my thoughts on the story Violet’s Music.
As early childcare professionals, we should develop the ability to analyze educational materials. We should obviously focus on the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards adopted in the Fall of 2017. As we share different modes of technology, through the use of videos, music, and books our goal is to provide concrete lesson extensions that strengthen the domains within the standards for each child individually as well as in a whole group or small group setting. By utilizing different media within the classroom we are also addressing the different learning styles such as visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic. This will meet the needs of the whole child within the STR²EAM classroom.
Article to critique: Music, Movement, and Make-Believe in the Preschool Classroom
In this article, the author describes the possibility of teaching creative expression instead of teaching drama skills. After all, It is important to foster a child's creativity and imagination. According to Church (2020), Children grow emotionally, socially, creatively, and cognitively through spontaneous music, movement, and drama. As a STR²EAM teacher, understanding the importance of spontaneity in the arts allows the child to grow and expand their confidence and allows them the opportunity to think creatively makes this type of play all the more important. We should allow students time and space to create for a child to fully grow and mature developmentally. I believe that it is important to think of ourselves as teachers that foster a child's self-expression. Church, had some valid points in the article and provided a wealth of lesson extensions that foster creativity with the STR²EAM classroom and beyond. For this reason, I gave a rating of 5 stars.

Video to critique: Nature Jam’s Preschool Prodigies Pilot-Sweet Beets-Rhythm Lesson and Song for Kids
Sweet Beats teaches a call and response method to keep the beat. I really like the green screen along with the dancing beets and cherries. I can see some children really adapting to the rhythm. I myself am not all that coordinated but even I can keep up with this rhythm. I also like how the word Cher-ry is shown in syllables form. I believe this takes the interactive response method to the next level. The video is only 4:05 minutes long which is not too long or too short for my taste. It is cute and definitely has a place in the STR²EAM classroom. For this reason, I'm giving this video a 4-star rating.

Book to critique: Violet’s Music
Violet's Music is a beautiful story. This story walks through the rhythmic life of an amazingly creative and musically talented little girl. The book is filled with onomatopoeia (sound words). Violet realized that many other children had creative talents of their own. Violet was music all of the time and she longed for a child that was just like her. She looked here, there, and everywhere to find a child that was music all day long just like her. Many times children may feel all alone. This story addresses a child's uniqueness and the abilities and talents they share with others. For this reason, I gave this book a 5-star rating.
